Smart Grocer

Terms of Service

Last updated 7 October 2026

Effective 7 October 2026.

1. Account terms

You must be at least 13 years old (16 where local law requires it) to use Smart Grocer on the website, in the iPhone app, or in the Android app. You may create an account with email and password, Google, or Apple, and you are responsible for activity on that account. One person per account. Sharing a shop is done by inviting household members with an email invite or a share link, not by sharing a login. Email invitees must sign in with that email and accept. Anyone with a share link who signs in can join after they consent. If you join a household, your items come with you. If you were already in another household, your list stays there.

You can type a shopping list before signing up. Any photo upload (a receipt, a list or ingredients) requires an account.

2. Acceptable use

  • Upload only receipts and grocery lists you have the right to upload.
  • Do not try to reach another household's data, or probe, scan, or overload the service.
  • Do not use the service to store unlawful content or to abuse receipt-reading or other automated tools.

3. Free trial and subscription

Each household gets a 60-day free trial from the day it is set up, and each email address gets 60 days in total: a household you set up later ends its trial when your first one's did. Joining someone else's household is free and does not use your own trial. The trial includes Insights, vendor-sorted lists, a household of up to 5 people, 3 photo scans a week per household, and optional reminders before shopping trips.

When the trial ends without a subscription, the household's list, learning, sync, reminders and Insights pause until someone subscribes. Nothing is deleted, and you can still export your data or delete your account. Smart Grocer reminds you 14, 7, 3 and 1 days before the trial ends. A subscription is $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, the same on the website and in the iPhone and Android apps. Billing starts the day you subscribe: if you subscribe during the free trial, on the website or in the apps, the first charge is taken that day and the rest of the trial ends. There is no automatic charge when a trial ends. It renews at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before renewal. Price, period, and cancellation terms are shown before you pay.

Website purchases go through Stripe, the payment processor for Smart Grocer website. Apple Pay or Google Pay may appear inside that checkout if your browser and card issuer support them. iPhone-app purchases use Apple In-App Purchase and are charged to your Apple ID. Those subscriptions renew unless you cancel in iOS Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions at least 24 hours before the period ends. Restore Purchases is available in the iPhone app. Android-app purchases use Google Play Billing and are charged to the Google account on that device. Those subscriptions renew unless you cancel in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions at least 24 hours before the period ends. Restore Purchases is available in the Android app.

4. Cancellation and refunds

You may cancel at any time. Access continues to the end of the paid period. Website subscriptions cancel from Settings in the app. Apple subscriptions cancel from iOS Settings. Google Play subscriptions cancel from Google Play. You may delete your account and grocery data at any time from Settings, or request deletion at /account-deletion. This cannot be undone.

Website (Stripe) refunds are handled case by case — email thesmartgrocerapp@gmail.com. Apple and Google Play refunds go through those stores. If a website renewal payment fails and Stripe stops retrying, Premium on the website pauses. Apple or Google Play Premium on that household stays if those stores are still billing. Paying the failed invoice turns website Premium back on.

5. Recommendations

Suggested items are automated guesses from your history. They can be incomplete or wrong — review the list before you shop. Receipt reading can misread a line; that is why you can edit the review screen before it is saved. Suggestions, Insights totals, and any price or cost estimates are for information only and may be inaccurate.

6. Limitation of liability

The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Smart Grocer's total liability is limited to the amount paid to Smart Grocer in the twelve months before the claim. Smart Grocer is not liable for indirect or consequential damages, including missed purchases or spoiled food.

7. Changes and termination

Smart Grocer may update these terms and will tell you about material changes. Smart Grocer may suspend accounts that break these terms. You may stop using the service at any time.

8. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, excluding conflict-of-law rules. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New Castle County, Delaware.
